Green Birds

Green Birds is a project carried out within the framework of the TKI BBE Innovation projects devoted to the co-production of bioenergy and green chemicals from biomass gasification. The project was carried out by Avantium, ECN and Kodok between January 2014 and December 2015. Green Birds was financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs under reference TEBE113008.

The Green Birds project aimed to increase the technical and economic feasibility of the co-production of energy/fuels and green chemicals from thermochemical conversion of biomass. For this, technologies and processes were developed within the project for the implementation of separation of BTX and ethylene from producer gas and reactive separation processes in biomass gasification plants. The main interest of this route for ECN is the co-production of valuable compounds in the green gas process, thus contributing to the decrease of the overall SNG cost.

Blue Bird: Concomitant generation of energy and chemicals from biomass waste streams

The aim of the project is to create an integrated and energy efficient technology not only for the gasification of humins to valuable products but also by co-feeding humins with other types of waste biomasses. This innovation will contribute to the biobased economy enabling green growth in The Netherlands.
This proposal sets out to achieve this by three main activities:

  • Gasification of humin waste streams optionally with other types of biomass i.e. lignin (AVT, ECN);
  • Selective ad- and desorption of ethylene and aromatics (BTX) (AVT, ECN);
  • An explorative study on the conversion of ethylene to BTX (AVT, Catalok, ECN).
